Polarisation reduces the affects of glare, which interfers with your vision. Technically, glare is a way of describing light wave transmission, reflected or refracted, that is aligned into a directional plane. Light is referred to as ‘polarised’ when aligned in this way. A polarised lens filters direct light and eliminates polarised light. The result of wearing a Sundog polarised lens is the ability to see light in its pure state. Objects appear defined, sharp and naturally coloured. Mela lenses Mela-Lens is one of the most important advancements in Sundog lens technology in many years. “Mela” stands for Melanin – a naturally-produced pigment that acts as a sunscreen protecting the skin from ultraviolet light. The Sundog Mela-Lens are infused with a synthetic melanin that absorbs light seamlessly over a broad spectral range. The Mela-Lens filters “Higher Energy Visible Light” (HEVL) lessening the impact of 98% of dangerous “blue light.” By filtering (instead of blocking) blue light, Melanin Lens Technology lenses do not affect the colors and actually improve both contrast and visual acuity. “Blue light” creates a veiled glare in the eye; Mela-Lens filtration of this portion of the spectrum effectively reduces veiled glare without polarization. The result is Ultra Violet Light is absorbed by the Mela-Lens more than blue, and blue light more than green, so contrast is improved, sharpening vision of details - without color shift. Since the light is not blocked, but filtered, color balance is maintained. How do athletes benefit from Mela lenses? While many people instantly notice a “soothing” difference, the true benefit of the Mela-Lens Technology is the filtering of the invisible HEVL light, resulting in reduced fatigue and ultimately better performance. Clarity of vision on a race track or road is improved for a number of reasons. Because Mela-Lens filters rather than blocks blue light there is minimal affect on color perception, which is important to all athletes. And Mela-Lens Technology reduces veiled glare protecting the eye, boosts contrast and improves visual acuity. If there is moisture on the race track or road the light can be reflected off the water or refracted (change direction as it passes through the water). Both of these conditions can cause glare and change the way an individual perceives contours on the road or track
surface and can affect depth perception. Reflected and/or refracted light affects people differently. Athletes bothered by the phenomenon do not like to race or train wearing polarized glasses. (It is important to note this does not affect everyone the same way and a polarized lens does not bother some people.) Choosing the Best Tint Color
The tint on a pair of sunglasses is actually irrelevant to the UV protection that it offers. The main purposes of tints are to help enhance your vision in specific light conditions and make your viewing more comfortable. Darker tints will naturally let less light in during very bright conditions and reduce squinting. Tints are also chosen for their fashion appeal. Clear: UV protection without color enhancement. Provides eye protection from the elements including wind, and dust. Ideal for extreme low light conditions; perfect for early / late day activity. Amber: a low light transmission color that increases contrast, and sharpens visual acuity and enhances depth perception; ideal for bright sun and overcast conditions. Smoke: a low light transmission color preserves natural colors, reduces glare and sharpens focus. Great for bright light conditions. Light Smoke: a popular general-purpose choice that reduces light intensity while maintaining original color. Yellow: enhances depth perception while altering colors slightly; excellent for low light conditions. Mauve: soothing and comfortable over long wearing periods; like brown, effectively scatters blue light and improves contrast. G15 Green: a low light transmission color that relieves glare and increases contrast. Blue: soothing versatile lens, that is ideal for lower visibility conditions (dim / flat light).
